Find Answer Passages on a Web Page with Jev

Ask a page a question and jump to passages that answer it.

Overview & result

Smart Find adds question-based search to a web page. Jev scores short passages against the question; extension code highlights matching text and lets the reader jump between results. It does not generate a new answer.

From the original post

I built Smart Find: Ctrl+F, but for questions.

Ask any web page a question and it jumps you to the passages that answer it. Powered by Jev, each search takes under a second and costs less than a cent.

How Jev fits in the loop

  1. The extension extracts page passages with their section context and prioritizes passages nearest the viewport.
  2. Jev scores passages as unrelated, related or directly answering the question, with eight score questions per request.
  3. Extension code normalizes scores, highlights matching passages and navigates between results.
  4. A service-worker cache reuses scores for repeated question and passage text; API failures are shown to the reader.

How to reproduce

  1. Follow the repository README: download the repository, enable Chrome Developer mode and Load unpacked with the extension folder.
  2. Enter your own TypeSafe API key in extension options. Page-text searches incur API charges.
  3. Open a web page and use Ctrl+Shift+Space or the toolbar button; enter a question and press Enter.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select a match and Enter to jump; Esc closes the search.

Why this build matters

Reduces time spent scanning a long page when a question cannot be expressed as an exact keyword.

Limitations

  • Source, recorded demonstration and code reviewed; extension not installed and results not independently reproduced.
  • The author reports sub-second searches and less than a cent per search; these are not independently measured guarantees.
  • Page text is sent to TypeSafe when searching. The API key is stored in the browser.
  • Results depend on extracted page text and model scores. A match is not a generated or independently verified answer.
